It was taped on January 6, 1989. Fox never aired it, but it was finally broadcasted on FX on June 18, 2002 - 13 years, 5 months and 12 days after the taping. It had aired many times outside the US before its US premiere, but the exact world premiere is unknown. Read this 1990 Playboy excerpt: This episode is now called "The Lost Show" by the producers, since they feel they lost control of it, and subsequently it never aired as scheduled. The reason was the Fox network censors. Producer Moye says they had 15 censor notes on the script, meaning 15 words or lines the censor considered "too graphic" or "over the edge" or "offensive to certain groups." These were the things they'd been hearing from the censor all along--at the rate of two or three a script -- but 15 notes was a whole new game. "We were gonna play ball," says Moye. They made some changes and sent the script back. The censor was on the phone. They made some more changes, caught some more flak. "It got to the point where we had given them all but four notes, which to us was bending double. We were really doing a contortionist job." Still, the censor wasn't happy. By the end of the week, they'd made 13 changes and "the integrity of the show was shot to hell," says Moye. The Lost Show is about sex. It begins with Peg and neighbor Marcy discussing ways to spice the Bundy's sex life. How about a change of venue? Cut to the Hop-On-Inn motel. See Al and Peg lean back in bed. Know they've done the wild -- and as always with the Bundys, brief -- thing. Later, we learn that Al and Peg were video-taped at the motel, as were Steve and Marcy before them. Cut to the courtroom, where Steve plays prosecutor in the couples' lawsuit against the Hop-On-Inn. Unfortunately for the Bundys, Steve screens the video tapes in court. Steve and Marcy win $10,000 for their multihour performance; Al and Peg's one-minute boogie is judged inconclusive. Or, as the jury foreman says, "No sex, no money." The motel's lawyer doubts Peg's claim that in their one filmed minute, she and Al had sex. Says Peg: "All right, it may not be sex to you, but it is to me. Just because you have husbands who can last long enough to time an egg doesn't mean that what Al does doesn't count... Is a crumb not a banquet for a starving person?... Is a fig leaf not clothing for the naked?" Now Peg's off the witness stand. She's being dragged back to her seat, and she's begging with every step: "You can't do this to Al! He'll lose what little confidence he has! You were great, baby! Please, oh, please, don't listen! Don't give up!" The courtroom clears. Al and Peg are alone. He leads her behind the judge's bench... The hands of the clock spin. Then we hear voices from behind the bench. Al: "Now, was that sex, or was that sex?" Peg: "That was SEX, Al", and she lights a cigarette and exhales a cloud of smoke... As this episode ends, the camera slowly pans to show a closed- circuit TV camera pointed directly behind the judge's bench... [From CAN'T DANCE, DON'T ASK ME (0313)] Al Bundy's xmas story: Twas the night before christmas, and all through the house, no food was a stirring, not even a mouse. Stockings were hung 'round dad's neck like a tie, along with a note that said "presents or die". Children were plotting all night in their beds, while the wife's constant whining was splitting his head. But daddy had money this year in the bank, then they closed up early, now dad's in the tank. ...and all of a sudden Santa appeared, a sneer on his face, booze in his beard. Santa I said as he laughed merrily, you do so much for others do something for me. Bundy he said, you only sell shoes, your son is a sneak-thief, your daughters' a flooze. Ho Ho Santa said, should I mention your wife, her hairs like an a-bomb, her nails like a knife. As he climbs up the chimney, that fat piece of dung, he mooned me two times, he stuck out his tongue. And I heard him exclaim, as he broke wind with glee: you're married with children, you'll never be free. [From IT'S A BUNDYFUL LIFE (part 1) (0412)] Five Days of Christmas Bud: 5 bowls a-flushing Peg: 4 'roids a-throbbing Kel: 3 nosehairs waving Bud: 2 children starving Peg: 1 untouched wife! King's song #1 I was born in the junkyard, A child of the streets, My Dad was catching garbage, And other tastes of treats. Police chased and caught me, I was in the pound alone, The Bundys came and got me, Didn't even bring a bone! Yeah, yeah, I ain't talkin' jive. I'll eat anything, Even if it's alive. Don't want no fax machine, Got no use for a phone, Don't even want my belly rubbed, Just give me a blood-stained bone! Starvin' out here, Mama, Got no food to call my own. You better watch your wives and children, I'm out here prowlin' for a bone. [From "LOOK WHO'S BARKING" (0513)] B.B. King's song #2 Woman makes you stupid, Every man's a hound, She says love's an ocean, That she pulled you in to drown. Woman makes you stupid, Always playin' with your head, Next time you'll be smiling, Is the day you wake up dead. Woman makes you stupid, Won't you show a little tale/tail, I don't know why we need 'em, Oh yeah: a coffin needs a nail! [From "IF AL HAD A HAMMER" (0603)] "I Care" by Al Bundy: When hooters jiggle around, and I find nickels on the ground, I care. When a mustang engine purrs, and the bathroom is not hers, I care. This, I tell you, brother, You can't have one without the other. Love and marriage, Love and marriage, It's an institute you can't disparage. Ask the local gentry, And they will say it's elementary. Try, try, Try to seperate them. It's an illusion. Try, try, Try and you will only come to this conclusion. Love and marriage, (Cut in "Married... with Children") Love and marriage, Go together like a horse and carriage. This was told by mother. You can't have one, You can't have none, You can't have one without the other. Writers Larry Jacobson, Sandy Sprung, Stacie Lipp, Kevin Curran and Christian McLaughlin have also made cameo appearances. Christina Applegate seems to have had some of the most visible success of the MWC cast, outside of the series. She has had the leading role in two motion pictures: "Streets", made in 1990, and "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead", in 1991. Immediately prior to working on MWC, Christina was a regular on the ABC police drama "Heart of the City". Her character was 14-year old Robin Kennedy, daughter of the series' star, a police detective played by Robert Desiderio. This show debuted in September 1986, and lasted less than a season. More about her in appendix VIII. MWC staff members Kevin Curran and Larry Jacobson were both previously employed as writers for Late Night with David Letterman. Jacobson appeared in many comedy skits on Dave's show, and he has followed this up by appearing several times on MWC. --==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==-- MARRIED... Usually omitted were the Christmas episodes from those seasons ["Christmas" (0712), "The Worst Noel" (0813), "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" (1012) and "God Help Ye, Merry Bundymen" (1113)]. These are generally reserved for the festive season, along with the Christmas episodes from otherwise unsyndicated seasons ["You Better Watch Out" (0213) and "It's a Bundyful Life" (0412/0413)]. Faced with the prospect of a stagnating syndication package, late 1998 saw the re-release of episodes from the early seasons into syndication. The series was about Vinnie Verducci (Matt Le Blanc) and his father, Charlie (Joseph Bologna). Other cast members included Joey Adams as jail-bait neighbor Mona who is always chasing Vinnie, and Rita Moreno, as Vinnie's boss. It should be noted that Vinnie is a reasonable approximation of what a male Kelly Bundy would be: handsome and incredibly stupid. Charlie is similar to Al, in that life has not treated him well, but where Al struggles to get by, Charlie is a constant schemer. The pilot episode of "Top of the Heap" was shown as the second half of a special one-hour Married... with Children episode. The first part was the show "KIDS! WADAYA GONNA DO" (0519), in which neither Vinnie nor Charlie makes an appearance. The second half-hour is the "Heap" pilot, and had no connection at all to the "KIDS!" story. Al Bundy makes an appearance in a scene where Vinnie and Charlie stop by Gary's Shoes to talk to him. Al, it turns out, had bet on Vinnie's boxing match the night before and lost his T.V. as a result. At the end of the episode, while Vinnie and Charlie sleep, a masked figure enters the Verducci apartment through the window. The mask is lifted to reveal Al, who steals the Verducci's TV. Subsequent episodes would feature cameo appearances by MWC characters Kelly and Bud Bundy. The series was canceled after only a few months. The Vinnie Verducci character was later reprised for a short appearance in the MWC episode "KELLY DOES HOLLYWOOD (part 1)" (0609). In June 1992, Fox once again tried to reprise the Vinnie character in the short-lived series "Vinnie and Bobby". MWC co-creator Ron Leavitt was partially responsible. The second attempt at a spinoff was the episode "RADIO FREE TRUMAINE" (0926) which aired on 04/07/95. This series would have focused on the activity around the student radio station at Bud Bundy's college, but it never even made it past the pilot stage. The third pilot-as-an-MWC-episode was "ENEMIES" (1024). It aired on 04/14/96. This show was about two people who share a small apartment with a group of dysfunctional "friends". --==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==-- Remakes: Hilfe, meine Familie spinnt (Germany, 1992-93) Unlike the dubbed original version of Married... with Children, this German-language remake of 26 early episodes was not a success in Germany. The Bundys were called Strunk. Married for Life (United Kingdom, 1996) This British remake about the Butler family was cancelled after only seven episodes. A Guerra dos Pintos (Brazil, 1999) 22 episodes about the family Pinto premiere during summer 1999 on Bandeirantes Network. --==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==-- MARRIED... Creators Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt had already agreed to reunite to oversee a Bundy swan-song. Both cast and crew alike were shocked by the Fox network's April 17 announcement that the show would not be returning. In the event, "The Desperate Half-Hour" (1123) and "How to Marry a Moron" (1124) two-parter was screened as an hour-long special, advertised by Fox as a series finale. For television audiences, their last moments with the Bundys showed Kelly Bundy, single once again, commiserating with "loved ones" - an army of ex-boyfriends. Perhaps the production team had suspected that there was a possibility they would not be returning, as writers Russell Marcus and Pamela Eells' "tortuous sanctity of marriage speech" for Al could almost read as an intended epitaph for the series. At that time, "Chicago Shoe Exchange" (1121) had yet to air, and would actually be the last episode of "Married... with Children" to premiere on the Fox network, screened five weeks after Fox's "official" finale on June 9, 1997. "Chicago Shoe Exchange" was not the last episode to premiere in the US, though. "I'll See You in Court" finally premiered on June 18, 2002, on FX. Whilst no official reasons for the cancellation have ever been given, rumors and theories were offered by tabloid reporters, including production woes and snowballing budgets. The cast's contracts were all up for re-negotiation and actors' fees were named as a contributing factor. The "Los Angeles Times" claimed that Ed O'Neill had received $500,000 per episode for season 11 - a questionable statistic - and that his salary demands had made the show's budget become unacceptable. Columbia Tristar, the show's distributor, had reportedly asked for $1.5m an episode, a figure which would not allow Fox to even break-even in terms of advertising revenue. Fox apparently dismissed this figure immediately, and negotiations became stagnant. Certainly, the ratings for the show were in decline, and had been so for some years. The latter half of season 10 had seen a notable decrease in the ratings, possibly due to Katey Sagal's maternity leave, which had necessitated a two-month absence from the show. However, the biggest decrease came when Fox changed the show's time- slot for season 11, moving "Married... with Children" from the Sunday night slot it had occupied for ten seasons. The new Saturday night graveyard slot saw an huge instant drop in the ratings, which sank from the previous season's 15m viewers, to just 9m - a respectable figure given the poor nature of the scheduling. Ironically, when the new time was announced, "Entertainment Weekly" magazine predicted that in new current timeslot, it would likely be the show's last season. Speaking at the time, Ed O'Neill remained optimistic: "If this [move] had happened five years ago, I would have been upset. But I think at this point it takes some pressure off. We've carried the load a long time for Fox." However, following the disastrous season premiere, the show was hastily moved back to Sundays, though outside of prime-time hours, and with little publicity. This time-slot was plagued with problems, as over-runs from football games caused unexplained pre- emptions, along with only partial broadcast in certain areas. Finally, the show was moved to Monday nights. Despite all this, the ratings - though comparatively poor - were maintained, and were showing gradual improvement. Publicity was minimal, but the audience figures were survivable. Only the last four scheduled episodes "Damn Bundys" (1120), "Lez Be Friends" (1122), "The Desperate Half-Hour" / "How to Marry a Moron" (1123/1124) were properly publicized, and the impressive rise back to 15m over those weeks speaks for itself. In the eyes of Fox, though, the damage was already done, and in spite of a huge boost in figures, they remained skeptical that viewers for a twelfth season would be above 9m. The cast were all disappointed that they were deprived of an opportunity to properly conclude the series, and the cancellation made for a disappointing and ignoble end for Fox's longest-running series, and the then longest-running original comedy series on US television. Following the cancellation, the cast members went their separate ways. Christina Applegate made three movies in 1997, "Mafia" reaching number one in the US box office charts. The fall of 1998 saw Christina Applegate starring in "Jesse", a new sitcom which David Faustino and Amanda Bearse both made contributions to. The average season one US audience was 19 mi. viewers. However, "Jesse" was cancelled after two seasons. After that she played in several movies, eg with Cameron Diaz or with Gwyneth Paltrow. David Faustino filmed a pilot for a sitcom called "Ruby", though the series never made it onto television. 1999 saw an upturn for the fortunes of David Faustino, who has appeared in a variety of guest roles since then, including episodes of "Unhappily Ever After", "Nash Bridges" and "The X-Files". Ed O'Neill was content to turn his talents back to the theatre, appearing in several fringe productions on the Los Angeles stage and small-scale radio plays. He played minor parts in movies, e.g. "Lucky Numbers" with John Travolta and Lisa Kudrow. Unfortunately his TV series "Big Apple" was no success. Katey Sagal has appeared in a number of TV movies and currently contributes vocals to Fox's animated series "Futurama". She also took part in the unsuccessful series "Tucker". Her latest series "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" with John Ritter premieres in Fall of 2002. Harold Sylvester appeared in the "The Army Game" and is concentrating on a writing career. Amanda Bearse now works mainly as a director, whilst on-screen spouse Ted McGinley could be seen in "Sports Night" and "The West Wing". David Garrison became a highly-respected figure in the theater world, e.g. appearing in the Broadway production of "Titanic". He also keeps on playing guest parts on TV series as Law & Order or "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch". As of this writing, Fox have announced that reunion specials for the Bundys, are "a possibility", though no formal negotiations are known to be underway. Fox have since denied that a reunion has ever been considered, despite issuing official statements to the contrary. --==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==-- APPENDIX IX - OPENING CREDITS "Married... with Children"'s opening titles underwent many revisions during the show's eleven seasons. The basic sequence consisted of: location shots of Chicago, followed by the series logo, actor credits, brief production credits over a shot of the Bundy house, finishing with a sequence of Al sitting on the couch, distributing money to the family. The exception to this was a few random shows during the ninth season which omit the couch sequence. For season eleven, the couch sequence was omitted permanently. The syndicated repeats never featured the couch sequence, though can be discerned from season 11, in which each episode features a short teaser sequence before the opening credits. The location footage comprised three videotaped views of Chicago, opening with a shot of the famous Buckingham Fountain. From season four onwards, this sequence was streamlined to an isolated shot of the fountain. Certain syndicated repeats of season ten feature the complete original location sequence, even though it was not featured on the Fox broadcasts. Four different versions of the couch sequence were filmed, each utilising the same basic structure. The first version, featuring Al in a red shirt, appears from 0101 to 0222; the second version features David Faustino with long hair and was used from 0301 to 0401; the third version is the most commonly seen, and lasted from episode 0402 until 1003, featuring David Faustino in a bright yellow shirt; the fourth and final version was the only couch sequence to feature the Bundy's second dog, Lucky. Katey Sagal was pregnant at the time, so Peggy sits throughout the entire sequence. This version appeared from 1004 until 1024. Here's a quick run-down to identifying seasons: The show's current executive producer is listed at the end of the opening credits, and is a useful way of narrowing the episodes down. They were: Seasons 1-6: Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt Season 7: Ron Leavitt Season 8: Michael G. Moye Season 9: Katherine Green, Michael G. Moye Season 10: Richard Gurman, Kim Weiskopf Season 11: Pamela Eells US ORIGINAL TRANSMISSIONS AND ALL NON-US TRANSMISSIONS: Season 1: Actors' names shown using the logo's stamp motif. The exterior of the Bundy house is seen painted brown in this season only. Season 2: Same titles as season one, except with the Bundy house shown with the more familiar beige exterior. Season 3: From this season on, Actor's credits shown over accompanying specially shot scenes - Al motionless on the couch, Peggy tossing salad whilst smoking in a pink blouse, Steve holding a baseball, Marcy finding a cigarette in her salad wearing a grey jacket, Kelly at the door, Bud reading a porn magazine. Season 4: Completely new titles, consisting of a mixture of re-shoots and new compositions. Al is seen placing his hand in his pants, Peggy tosses a salad again but in a blue blouse, Steve ducks to avoid a flying newspaper, Marcy eating salad in a pink jacket, Kelly applying nail varnish, Bud talking on the phone. David Garrison is omitted after "A Taxing Problem" (0415). Note: "Hot Off the Grill" (0401) uses the season three titles, but runs credits over the couch sequence. Season 5: Same titles as the revised version seen in the latter half of the previous season (i.e. without David Garrison), although Kevin Curran is listed as a producer on this season, unlike the previous year. Season 6: Same titles as previous year, except with a new shot of Marcy having a door shut in her face, a new shot of Bud with dumb- bells taken from "Wabbit Season", and the inclusion of Ted McGinley, sitting at a bar in an out-take from "She's Having My Baby, Part 2" (0602). In the titles for "She's Having My Baby, Part 1" (0601) a near-identical shot is employed, but instead Ted McGinley pours the contents of the beer glass onto his lap. Seson 7: Same titles as previous year, except a new shot of Jefferson with a tray dropping bottles. From 0701 to 0703 same titles as season 6. Season 8: Revised titles with new shots of Al with a remote control, Peggy on the stairs, Marcy wearing a "Feminism Lives" t-shirt, Bud using a marker pen to fill in his beard, Jefferson with a deck of cards. Season 9: Partly revised titles with Al wearing a bath-robe from "Just a Little Off the Top" (0812), Peggy on the stairs, Marcy wearing a "Cleaner, Greener Chicago" t-shirt taken from "Ride Scare" (0825), Kelly hopping at the front door, Bud on the phone with a beard taken from "Sofa So Good" (0815), Jefferson with a party noise-maker taken from "The D'Arcy Files" (0820). Season 10: Revised titles with new shots of Al with his hand in his pants, Peggy clapping her hands from "25 Years and What Have You Got?" (0918), Marcy in a coat at the front door taken from "I Want My Psycho Dad, Part I" (0913), Kelly staring in a red dress taken from "Something Larry this Way Comes" (0916), Bud with the leg of a mannequin taken from "Naughty But Niece" (0904), Jefferson is shocked by Marcy taken from "Sleepless in Chicago" (0908). From 1001 to 1003 same titles as season 9. Season 11: Same titles as previous year, except without the couch sequence, and a new shot of Bud being shocked holding a magazine in an out-take from "The Stepford Peg" (1101). US SYNDICATED TRANSMISSIONS: Seasons 1 & 2: A mixture of cannibalised shots of the actors is featured: Al from the season four titles, Peggy on the couch from the "Pilot" (0101), Steve and Marcy from the season three titles, Kelly at the telephone from "Poke High" (0304) and Bud on a treadmill from "Master the Possibilities" (0216). Unlike the original transmissions, the Bundy house is seen with its usual beige exterior; originally it was brown. Season 3: Truncated version of the original season three titles, i.e. there is no couch scene where Al hands out money to the other family members. Season 4: Truncated version of the original season three titles, with "Hot Off the Grill" (0401) given the proper season four titles. Season 5: Truncated version of the original season five titles. Season 6: Truncated version of the original season six titles. Season 7: Truncated version of the original season seven titles. Season 8: Truncated version of the original season eight titles. Season 9: Truncated version of the original season nine titles. Season 10: Truncated version of the original season ten titles.
