THE RAUNCH HANDS
By Mike Tchang

I first started playing Guitar with George (on Bass), and a drummer, plus other friends for kicks, that was when I was 15 or 16. None of us ever sang, we just noodled around instrumentally. Then I met up with Chandler, and we got together as a duo
(Tchang 'n' Chandler) and played at this club which was situated in the basement of a church called Club 57. We only did originals at that time, some of which we still play now! Then we tried to get together as a foursome and worked on it for a while. Chandler was pretty discontent with it and decided to join up with The Outta Place. During that time George and I joined up with Vince Brnicevic on Drums, and Mike Mariconda, Guitar, and we started to work up an instrumental group. George, Vince, and I have never been in any other groups, but Mariconda had been in many bands throughout high school & college. He also has a bachelors of music from NYU college. Other than that none of us had any formal training for the instruments we play. After a while Chandler decided to join up with us again, and we played our first Raunch Hands gig on February 4th '84 (editors note: at the No Se No). Our next gig on March 17th (editors note: also at No Se No) was the first actual show with Mariconda to make it a fivesome.

As "Tchang 'n' Chandler" we played at Club 57 a few times, and once at the Pyramid Club. From what I can remember, our show at Tim Warren's wedding was around our last as "Tchang 'n' Chandler."

All of 1984 + '85 we giged heavily in N.Y.C.. We've also played in Boston, Canada, Maine, New Jersey etc.... In the summer of '85 we bought a van, and had our manager book a tour out to California and back! We played North Carolina, Texas, Arizona, Tennessee, Los Angeles, San Francisco etc... Before that summer we recorded what was to be the "El Rauncho Grande" on our own, with the help of Mike Lewis who used to play with the Lyres, and now plays with the A-Bones. Mike Mariconda used to play with them, the two other people in that band (editors note: The A-Bones), Billy and Miriam, used to play with the Zantees.
