Aloha Basilea The Hula Hawaiians

ALOHA BASILEA THE HULA HAWAIIANS UND 50 JAHRE ENTERTAINMENT IN BASEL (Switzerland, 1995 - by Matti/Engeler) 1995, first edition, with hard cover! S/S (in still sealed condition) CHF 45:00
Ultra rare fantastic long gone book about (mostly) the legendary HULA HAWAIIANS from Basel, Switzerland! The Hula Hawaiians were responsible for no less but one of the best, fastest, and also most skilfully played rock n roll Guitar instrumentals from 1957: The Chimpanzee Rock. The Hula Hawaiians were starting out as a classic Hawaii band in the mid 40s, but were soon incorporating all types of different styles into their set, this is especially after their reforming in 1954. They’ve most likely played the best ever version of the Arthur Smith classic Guitar Boogie, which has been a standart in their set for over the past 55+ years! The Chimpanzee Rock was recorded upon viewing Blackboard Jungle at the local Swiss movie theatre in late 1955. The movie was opening with the track Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley and His Comets. It was especially the lead guitar break from Rock Around The Clock that inspired them to record The Chimpanzee Rock. They’ve played some other rock and roll numbers too, but only a very few ones, and mostly crooners. About 50% of their set was consisting of Hawaii music, the rest was guitar boogies, guitar instrumentals, country and western, charleston, as well as some classic old time novelty favorite numbers from the 30s-40s. They would usually start out with a set of mostly Hawaii music, followed by a slightly shorter set of gutsy, and sometimes furrious guitar instrumentals. The final set was made up by old time novelty standarts, country and western, and hawaii music. They’ve made some great records too! I could highly recommend the Hula Hawaiians CD on the Bear Family label (featuring The Chimpanzee Rock, The Hula Boogie, and many other of their best cuts from around the mid 50s - late 50s) The rockabilly cats would definitely love them!
Anyways, this truly fabulous book contains the full story of The Hula Hawaiians, and it is pretty damn accurate too! You can actually trust into what this book says, which I think is only very seldom ever the case with books about music. The text is in German, but you get an extensive Hula Hawaiians discography (starting out in 1947), plus hundreds of cool, ultra rare photos of mostly the Hula Hawaiians, along with short bios/photos of some of the other best, and most notorious local show business people of the 40s and 50s like musicians (early guitarists, bands), magicians, clowns, etc. All of them great, and the photo material is amazing too! The book appears in ULTRA RARE STILL SEALED MINT CONDITION! Found a few more final copies of it. All the unsold copies were destroyed by the publisher (the main local news paper from Basel) over 10 years ago, only a few hundred copies have survived! It only sold locally, to a few hundred people from around the town of Basel. This is very essential!
book ALS DIE HAARE LAENGER WURDEN (Switzerland - Christoph Merian Verlag) 1,7 Kilo weight S/S CHF 68:00
Fantastic German written book about the sixties beat, garage scene from Basel, Switzerland! It includes hundreds of rare photos and biographies of most of the local Basel 60s beat, garage bands including THE DYNAMITES, THE SEVENS, RED DEVILS (it was written by me for most parts), COUNTDOWNS (it was written by me for most parts too), THE SHEAPES, BLIZZARDS, GHOOLS, EXCEPTION, CHAPS, ATTACKS, BARRY WINDOW AND THE MOVEMENTS, VAMPIRES, PHANTOMS, and countless other mostly obscure bands! Basel has been the leading Swiss city for beat, garage and rnb bands in the 60s. This huge 250+ page book also contains chapters about local gangs/rebelling teens of the 50s and 60s, clubs, labels, foreign bands that have played in Basel, like The Kinks, The Slaves, as well as the UK band The Big Wheel, and much else. Most of the record sleeves pictured hail from my collection. I’ve also put in the dates, locations for virtually every single gig by The Countdowns, and the early Red Devils until 1966 (after that they became a professional show band with a slightly different lineup), which is quite an archivement. It packs a massive amount of history, along with tons of pretty wild and exclusive photo material. Highly recommended! Don’t miss out of it!

Super rare early edition with the original cover, as well as with the low first ordering number of Pyramid Books 58 (it was later on reissued with the ordering number of 191.) There is a very, very faint stamp of the previous owner on top of the frontcover (just below the title) that is almost invisible, and therefore not really disturbing, as you can’t hardly even make it out! Graft - Brutality - Immorality A frank expose of life behind bars! Her crime was stealing a coat. Her punishment was 18 months in a prision for woman; 18 months in a vermin-infested pen - where the warden provided special cells for the girls who catered to his excesses -where matrons wielded whips and dope-peddling was rampant -where crowded quarters encouraged woman with unnatural yearnings. Here is an uncompromising indictment of a vicious system that treats woman like caged animals, and breeds degeneracy where it ought to bring reform. The frontcover art has got four caged reform school girls on it, so, you know, you definitely can’t go wrong with this one! Condition is tops too! It looks about VG++ on the outside, and is still very nice at the edges. The inside pages of this almost 60 year old book look only very slightly aged, which is normal for books from 1953.

book THE FLEETWOODS - Tout Doux Tout Doucement (Come Softly To Me) (France - by Troxel-Christopher-Ellis-Delanoe-Gerald / Edwin H. Morris, S.A.R.L.) 1959, 4 page sheet music! VG++ CHF 14:00
Super rare original French 4 page sheetmusic from 1959 featuring the french lyrics and music to The Fleetwoods 1959 hit Come Softly To Me. The frontcover has all the bands, and vocalists pictured or mentioned that were cutting a coverversion of the song: Marcel Amont, Annie Cordy, Luis Mariano, Silvana Blasi, Frank Gerald, Andre Massali, Delta Rhythm Boys, Michele Montana, The Fleetwoods, Frankie Vaughan, Richard Barrett, Jacky Nougaz, Eddie Barclay etc. On the bottom left of the frontcover is a small tag from Radio Monte Carlo for the Reverendum International De La Chanson 1960 where you could vote for your favorite singer and win a Villa on the Cote D'Azur! The tag (which is a rare artifact itself) was only attached on the very left and would be easily removable, but I think that it would be better to keep the rare tag intact.

Super rare original first edition book from 1966 by the autor of the fine early J.D. tale Knock On Any Door from 1947! Alongside Las Casas Peyton Place is a model of Kiwanis property. A suny paradise on the Mexican shore, where lust and greed were private affairs, until suddendly Las Casas beauty was discovered, and men and women came in search of pleasure. A frantic uninhibited orgy and thrill-seeking, where corruption flourished, desire was flaunted, and private indecency threathened to become public policy. Flashing, dramatic, earthy sex.
