In 1965, producer Joe Stevenson formed Del Val and Pentagon Records to release some of the finest soul music to come out of his West Philadelphia recording facility Imperial Sound Studio on W. 60th St. Most of the singles that were released have become highly sought after by soul fans in England where they have been popular in soul clubs since the 70s. This CD contains 26 tracks which have never appeared before on CD in the USA. Most of the material has been transfered from the original two track mono masters and unreleased acetates. Includes deluxe 12 page color booklet with rare photos, history and discograpghy of the label.
Throughout the 60s and early 70s, producer Wally Osborne was responsible for creating some of the finest moments in soul music history with his Toxan and Womar labels. One of his productions, Herb Johnson’s I’m So Glad has sold over 50000 copies in England alone. This 22 track CD contains a mixture of ballads and uptempo dancers including 4 unreleased songs by the falsetto-led Topics from 1968. In 1964, Coast Artists and Diplomacy Records took teen rock band The De-Fenders and, for a publicity stunt, shaved their heads to capitalize on the success of then popular actor Yul Brynner. Renamed The Brymers (pronounced Brimmers), the group became a popular backing band for many of the hit makers of the era and, in 1966, scored regionally with a composition of their own entitled I Want To Tell You. With the garage rock classic Sacrifice as the B-side, the single conclusively proved that The Brymers didn’t need promotional gimmicks in order to prove they were a group to take notice of. This collection of Brymers recordings includes an unreleased single by The De-Fenders, never-before-heard demos, a backing session for April Silva on a 45 side, live performances and a very rare and complete one-take demo recording from March 1965 of The Brymers performing the era’s greatest hits. An amazing collection with groups such as H20 (Mozambique), who had even carton boxes among their instruments, a rare track by the A-Cads, the incredibly rare Kriptons from Angola, a great Italian-sung cover of the Electric Prunes I Had Too Much To Dream by Conjunto Oliveira Muge from Mozambique, the eerie French sung Eh Bien Mon Ami by African Fiesta. Initially gaining a modicum of fame in their home state of New York with the east coast surf/rock group The Dolphins, Roy and Tor Pinney eventually relocated to Texas and (both separately and together) found much greater success with The Chains, whose version of I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore was a regional smash. Referred to as The Beatles of El Paso, The Chains recorded four singles, all examples of 1960’s garage rock at its finest. In 1965, the Five Emprees from Benton Harbor, Michigan scored the regional smash hit Little Miss Sad which broke nationally and is still played on oldies radio today. This authorized, 25 track CD retrospective compiles their complete studio recordings circa 1965 to 1968. On this disc you find the Emprees big ticket album, their nine singles, three previously unreleased solid garage tracks recorded in a radio station, plus their previously unheard should have been hit Lurkin circa 1968. Package includes a 24 page booket chock full of fabulous photos and memorabilia culled from the bands personal scrapbooks and extensive liner notes by Gary Burns.

Best known to 60s rock afficionados for the bombastic garage pounder, Bad Woman, Pat Farrell And The Believers produced a body of infectous commercial material. Included in this 17-track retrospective are both sides of their two singles for Diamond Records plus plenty of unreleased pop nuggets, early demo recordings and four songs by their early incarnation, the Triumphs. Also of note is that the band penned all songs featured on this disc. Along with the Farfisa-fueled Brand New Baby and the fratty Hey, this overview showcases their lush, Vietnam protest number War Boy (which charted on Billboard), the waltz-like All My Love, the Tommy James-inspired Oh My Angel, and numerous other slick pop creations. A special bonus stereo instrumental mix of Bad Woman proves how tight and imaginative this legendary Eastern PA quartet was. Disc comes packaged with an archival 12-page booklet that documents their entire six-year history. (Note: five additional Triumphs tracks circa 1965 can be found on AA-069 Eastern PA Rock-Part One [1961-1966]). All music recorded by Clay Barclay, one of the region’s key behind-the-scenes musical figures throughout the decade.

The early 60s was a time when guitar-rock instrumentals ruled the airwaves, and the Fireballs and the Ventures led the way. Dick Stewart, who founded The Knights (a.k.a. King Richard and The Knights), was heavily influenced by these bands, which resulted in the Knights first 45 in 1963 titled Precision. Says Stewart, Precision (so titled by my wife, Judi, after the popular Fender bass) became a great regional hit in 1963, and it set the record by a local group performing an original tune for the most time at the number one position on KQEO AM radio in Albuquerque. (KQEO, during the 60s, had an incredible market-share rating of 51!) To this day, that record has not been broken. It was the novel classical piano riffs, combined with Stewart’s Stratocaster guitar licks that really gave this tune its unique hook. This highly sought after cult classic CD not only features nearly all of The Knights early to mid 60s instrumental and vocal releases, but a selection of vocals by other early to mid 60s Albuquerque rock and roll bands that enjoyed a massive amount of KQEO spins during that time, as well. The songs on this CD transport us back to a night when the Masters Apprentices were not yet a household name in Australia, in fact, they’d only had the name for two months. In a musty backstreet garage on the evening of Thursday, April 21 1966, the combo powered through 50 odd garage band staples and a few frenzied originals (of which the raucous Bye Bye Baby is included here). With manager Graham Longley’s reel to reel recorder perched on top of a car, the night was captured for posterity, the bounty would not begin to emerge from the garage (literally, that’s where Graham stored the tapes) until 2004, with the release of the CD From Mustangs To Masters First Year Apprentices. Further rampaging material from that long ago evening is presented in this new release: the band plays apprentice to such masters as Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and Howlin Wolf, as well as tackling then new material by fellow acolytes like the Rolling Stones (whom they’d recently seen in live in concert), the Pretty Things, Animals and Them. All in all, a wild night’s work. The CD features an 8 page foldout leaflet with boss pix of the early Master Apprentices, some never seen before. Fully licensed on Nickoff Records.

Ultra rare signed copy of killer 1965 to 1966 Swiss beat/garage CD! There were only around 20 copies of it ever signed, but most of the signed copies were handed out as a promo to friends etc. The Sevens leader Michel Bovay (r.i.p) has unfortunately died since, which makes this one even a lot more collectable. Most of the songs are are original compositions. This is a must especially for the three killer unreleased cuts. All tracks great. Nice booklet too. You simply can not find a better Swiss 60s beat/garage CD.

In September 1967, Ronnie Walker had a top ten hit on both Philadelphia soul music AM radio stations WHAT and WDAS. The song was Really Really Love You which continues to get airplay today thanks to Jerry Blavat and Geator Gold Radio (AM 1060). Though Ronnie’s falsetto voice has been compared to Smokey Robinson, it is his unique songwriting, sincere lyrics, brilliant melodies and angelic delivery that is in the same league as other Philly artists like The Del Fonics, Stylistics, Eddie Holman and Blue Magic. This 22 track CD contains all of the mostly self-written songs he recorded between 1966 to 1973. Includes deluxe 12 page booklet with informative liner notes, photos and discography.
