Almost all the technology from previous versions is still available in Word, stored nicely away in Tools/Customize/Commands, under the category All Commands. In the following table, you'll find a list of these commands, and the interface menu name or dialog box title. You can drag any of these commands to the Mail merge toolbar.
Command |
Menu or dialog box |
The toolbar button with a dropdown list of all merge fields. |
Mail merge Helper dialog box - here's where you used to set up mail merge. |
MailMerge... |
You used to get here by clicking the toolbar button labelled "Mail merge..." or, in older versions, clicking the button with the three red dots. The options for suppressing blank lines, choosing the mail merge type, and getting into Query Options can be found here. |
This brings up the interface to create a WORD TABLE data source, instead of an Access database (*.mdb file). (The command for the latter is MailMergeCreateList) |
MailMergeCreateHeaderSource |
Let's you create a table of field names for a data source that has no field names. Corresponds to the Create Header Source in Step 2 of the Mail merge Helper. |
MailMergeDataForm |
The form interface for entering, editing and deleting data in the attached Word table data source |
MailMergeEditDataSource |
Same as above |
MailMergeOpenHeaderSource |
Let's you specify an existing file as a header source. |
MailMergeQueryOptions |
Displays the Query Options dialog box directly. |
MailMergeUseAddressBook |
Connects to an Address book using the same connection method as earlier versions of Word (conversion filter), instead of OLEDB. This is the only way you can create a virtual file that is viewable and saveable. This is also the only way you can add a button to the Mail Merge toolbar in Word 2002 to connect to an Address book (so that you don't have to display the new Mail merge Wizard task pane). |
